Rehearsals Begin for This Random World

Rehearsals are underway for This Random World at Theater for the New City, our first production of the 2023/24 season! Director Michael Luggio has assembled a dynamic cast to lead this play, running September 21-23.

Paula Loud (Scottie) rehearses a scene for This Random World

Mining the comedy of missed connections, This Random World asks the serious question of how often we travel parallel paths through the world without noticing. An ailing woman, Scottie (Paula Loud) is planning one final trip to cross off her bucket list. But Scottie is insistent: her adult children are not to know. In fact, they know very little about their mother or even themselves.

Her son Tim (played by Paula Loud’s own son, Brian Loud), is struggling to establish a career as a writer, and publishes his own obituary as a prank— a prank he can’t undo. His sister Beth (Lindsay Van Norman), flies off to Nepal to defy death and perhaps chase meaning of her own. Throughout this play, we follow a dynamic ensemble of interconnected individuals navigating their own complex lives, weaving a story of hope, failure, inspiration, and longing.

This Random World is a charming, funny, and intimate meditation on the power of chance and how we might be closer to each other than we’ll ever know.
