Tools for Success

Self tapes are nothing new, but it is more important than ever that your self tapes are the absolute best they can be. Obviously the most important element of your audition is your work, but if a casting director can’t see you, hear you, or pay attention to you, then you’ve let yourself down. You don’t need to have the best camera or a 5 light set up to deliver a high quality tape. Here are some tools that I recommend for your self tape setup to deliver the best audition possible.

Microphones

Smartphones have some of the best camera’s that you already own. But picture quality is only one part of the self-tape equation. A good microphone for your phone is a small investment but makes a huge difference in the quality of your tape. If you are going to invest in anything for your self-tape setup, a microphone is a must-have.

  • The Rode VideoMic Me is a great choice for phones. This shotgun microphone plugs directly into your phone’s headphone jack, and there is a microphone with a lightning port plugin for iphone users as well. I have used this microphone myself and can vouch for its quality.

Smartphone Lavalier Mic $13.99

  • A lavalier mic clips directly to your shirt and is another good option for self-tape sound. This microphone is compatible with your smartphone, but you will need a lightning adapter to use with an iPhone. A lavalier microphone can be a bit limiting since it will need to be attached to you, but is a really affordable option at $13.99.

Backdrops

You will find that casting directors ask for a plain solid backdrop for your self tapes— no distractions. So a great way to provide a clean professional looking backdrop without using a wrinkled sheet or a stark white wall is a collapsible backdrop. It’s portable for those auditions on the road and easy to pop up and use anytime.

  • Both of these backdrops are great options for your self-tapes, video meetings and classes. A number of my students use these backdrops and they make a big difference in their video quality. They don’t require a tripod or stand to use them, but they both come with one as a bonus. The idea is to limit distractions so we can focus on you and your acting, the most important part of any self-tape.

Lighting

You need to be properly lit in every self-tape, but you don’t need a high end setup to get the job done. A good window with some natural sunlight is always a great choice for your self tapes. But a good light is a great backup for poorly lit rooms and late night shoots.

  • This two light setup will give you soft, even light for every self-tape. This is a reliable setup I often use when taping my student actors for auditions and it delivers great results every time. It does take up a bit more space to store and time to set up, but the results are worth it.

Tools like these are a worthwhile investment in yourself and your careers. Just like a quality headshot and reel, delivering professional looking auditions will give you a greater chance of attracting the right attention to your work and keep you moving forward. But of course, some good lighting and a clean backdrop won’t cover up a lack of preparation. It’s up to you to make sure you are prepared and committed to your work every time you step in front of a camera. Keep studying, keep improving, and the rest will come.
